工作记忆被看作是人类高级认知活动的核心，是学习、推理、问题解决和智力活动的重要成分。近年来，研究者通过对儿童、成人以及多动症患者、酒精谱系障碍患者、中风患者等特殊人群的工作记忆训练发现，个体的工作记忆能力具有可塑性。并且，研究者采用脑成像研究技术，探讨了工作记忆可塑性的神经机制。研究发现，通过工作记忆的训练，与工作记忆相关脑区的激活增强，研究还表明，工作记忆能力的可塑性与大脑皮层多巴胺D1受体密度的改变有关。

虽然这些认知神经科学的研究证明了工作记忆训练可以改变相关脑区的激活，但是，工作记忆所涉及的脑区复杂，可能需要不同脑区所组成的神经网络活动共同完成。而脑成像技术很难依靠时间激活模式的不同来解释工作记忆训练对大脑加工过程的影响。事件相关电位（ERPs）技术具有较高的时间分辨率，可以根据时间激活模式的不同辨别工作记忆加工各个阶段所发生的变化。

赵鑫博士尝试采用ERPs技术，以健康成年人为被试，采用自适应活动记忆训练任务，通过双盲对照实验设计，探讨了工作记忆刷新功能训练对大脑活动的影响。行为结果显示，通过20天的工作记忆刷新任务训练，与对照组相比，训练组在工作记忆2-back任务上的反应时显著降低。脑电结果显示，与对照组相比，训练组被试顶部的N160波峰显著升高，额区的P200波峰显著降低，并且顶部的P300波幅显著的升高。结果表明，工作记忆训练对大脑活动的影响很有可能在感知觉阶段就发生了。具体表现为，通过工作记忆训练，个体首先在视觉信息鉴别阶段，对刺激的识别能力增强，接着对无关信息的抑制能力和对当前目标刺激集中注意能力增强，进而工作记忆中表征的更新能力得到提升。
